1. To make the students learn about the plot of the story of Frankenstein. 2. To make students learn about some important words and phrases related to   the story.

4. To arouse students’ interest in science and encourage them to use scientific technology properly. 
5. To help students learn to analyze the characteristics and feelings of the main   characters of the story and improve students’ critical thinking ability. Teaching important and difficult points: 
1. Apply reading strategies to practical use: How to find the main idea of each   paragraph quickly. 
2. Find out the information needed within given time. 
3. Express their opinions freely, clearly as well as creatively. Teaching methods: 
1. Guessing based on given video 
2. Task-based teaching and learning methods. 3. Discussion and cooperation. Teaching aids: 
Multi-media, a short video, PPT, blackboard, textbook Teaching procedures: Step 1  Pre-reading  
1. Start the class by asking questions.  
   Do you like watching films in your spare time? What kind of film do you like watching best?( Then show a short video and ask students to guess:) 
What’s the type of the film?   (    )   
A. Romance Film   B. Adventure Film   C. Horror Film   D. Comedy 2. Some background information about the film and its original author. 
Yes, it’s a horror film which is adapted from a novel called Frankenstein written by an English writer Mary Shelly in 1816 when she was 19 years old. Today we are going to learn about the story of Frankenstein. Before learning about it, let’s first play a word game.  
3. Match the words with their meanings.

【Design Intention】: By talking about the preference for films and watching a video to arouse Ss’ interests, T can lead in what will be learnt today and introduce the background of the novel, and use a matching game to build their word bank for the following reading.  
Step 2  While-reading  
You all did a good job. Now please open your books and turn to page 58 and read Part 1 The Story of Frankenstein aloud, while reading, you are required to find the main plot of the story and fill in the blanks. You have two minutes. Go ahead! Part 1 The story of Frankenstein 
Task 1 Read Part 1 and fill in the blanks Beginning of the story  Development/Conflict   Ending of the story 
 
Task 2 Answer the following questions based on the plot of the story 1. How did Frankenstein create the creature?     (By using bones from dead bodies.) 
2. What are the characteristics of the creature? 
  (It’s large, strong, ugly, intelligent and has human emotions.) 3. Why do you think the creature wants a wife? 
 ( He’s lonely and unhappy as he has no friends.) 4. What does he do after his request is refused? 
   (He murders Frankenstein’s brother, his best friend Clerval, and finally, Frankenstein’s new wife Elizabeth.) 5. What action does Frankenstein take? 
   (He chases the creature to the Arctic to destroy it.) 
According to the above understanding of the story, now choose

  You all did a wonderful job. Next, let’s read the extract from Frankenstein. You just need to read the first sentence and the last sentence of each paragraph to gain the key words of the main idea of each paragraph. You have two minutes to go.

According to the description of the appearance, we can see the creature is   really ugly. Now let’s see how Frankenstein felt towards the creature.   Task 5  Read Para3 and find out the answers to the following questions. 
1. How did Frankenstein feel about the creature before his birth? How do you know that? 
     He was eager to see the creature. 
2. How did Frankenstein feel after the birth of the creature?

for the main idea, filling in the blanks about the creating scene of the creature, describing the appearance of the monster, comparing the scientist’s different feelings before and after its birth and analyzing Frankenstein’s thoughts and behaviors, based on those exercises, Ss’ reading skills, viewing skills and presentation skills can be improved and they can have a deeper understanding of the story.  
Step 3 Extensive reading  
     Just now we have discussed the feelings of Frankenstein, but we have no idea about the monster’s feeling. So let’s come close to the monster to know something about him. 
Come close to the monster 
The moment it was created, the monster attempted to adapt himself into human social patterns. He learned to speak and read. At one time he managed to rescue a drowning girl and tried hard to befriend with kids but was driven by all who saw him. He desired to be loved and accepted by humankind, but unfortunately he was not accepted because of his horrible appearance. 
This feeling of abandonment forced him to seek revenge(報(bào)仇) against his creator. As a matter of fact, the monster was a victim of prejudice.(偏見(jiàn)） 
 
When the monster stood up, I think he wanted to speak something, but Frankenstein didn’t hear. If Frankenstein and the creature had a chance to have a good talk, what would they talk about? Now group work, please make a dialogue between Frankenstein and his creature to make up the story in detail, you have three minutes to discuss. Then I would like to choose some of you to act it out.

the story in detail,

  All of you did a great job today, from your dialogues, I believe you have a gentle and reasonable heart towards the things around you. Now let’s read the following together. 
 Everything exists for a reason, and whatever happens, it also happens for a reason. Science can be a bridge leading humans from bad to good, it also can be a bridge leading us from good to bad. It all depends on ourselves.

in groups, which could not only cultivate their divergent thinking and the ability to cooperate, but also inspire them to see the hill from diverse angles. Finally, Ss could perceive the world in depth, and understand the proper use of science.
