Teaching Design for Book 7 Unit 3 Using LanguageⅡ 
Listening and Writing 
Ⅰ. General idea of the lesson design 
Listening, speaking, reading, writing and viewing are the five basic abilities in language learning. However, owing to many reasons, teachers can’t place equal emphasis on all these five skills.  
This lesson is designed to develop students’ writing ability in particular while combining practice in the other four abilities.  
Through this lesson, students can learn some tips about writing a complaint letter. For instance, the students will learn the structure of a complaint letter and also learn to adopt polite ways to state their purposes in writing the letter. Furthermore, they’ll also have to pay attention to the coherence of a whole passage. Besides, they need to know that the framework of a letter is of significance. After writing the letter, students will share their writing with the whole class to learn how to evaluate a piece of writing. In this way, each student can benefit from the class. 
Ⅱ. Teaching Background Analysis 1. The analysis of the teaching content 
The topic of this unit is Under the sea, which is mainly about the sea animals, sea plants, the awesome scenes under the sea as well as some stories about the sea. This lesson is based on “listening and writing” part which consists of four tasks. Before listening to a dialogue between a tourist and the tour guide, students should read an advertisement about the whale watching tour and talk about the content of the advertisement. While listening, students will learn some basic listening skills. Besides, students will have to figure out what the tourist is unsatisfied with so as to write a letter of complaint to solve her problem. This task is designed creatively by replacing the original task of writing a dialogue. The focus of the lesson will be on practicing students’ ability to write a complaint letter, including some writing tips.  
2. The analysis of the students 
Having studied senior English for more than one year, the students have the ability of getting and processing information as well as reading and listening in English. But comparatively speaking, it is more difficult for many students to get down to writing a passage than to get 
information by reading a passage. In this lesson, the teacher tries to develop the students’ ability of writing a letter step by step. 
On the other hand, according to the quality education requirement, the high quality talents should not only be equipped with knowledge, but also the good virtue and comprehensive moral. The students at this phase are at a point in forming their own outlook, and the correct way to communicate with others is one important part. The students will learn to stick to their principles while communicating with others.  
Ⅲ. Goal Analysis 
1. Students will be able to learn some new words and expressions (awesome; leap; refund; much 
to my regret; I’m writing to place a complaint about…; I would appreciate it if you could…) by watching the related video clip and discussing in group work. 
2. Students will be able to develop and improve their ability to get the basic information of a

③I’m afraid that’s no good for us as we’re visitors to this area and we’re leaving tomorrow morning.

Ⅶ. Self-reflection 
This lesson centers on the development of students’ ability in writing a complaint letter and thus the thread running through the lesson is obviously its writing procedures. This clarity of lesson design is one of the strengths students felt good about. Another strength lies in the language support provided for students in the course of writing---some typical sentence patterns for complaint letters. Besides, students were actively involved in the whole lesson, which can serve as the further proof of the success in designing and carrying out the lesson. However, owing to the tight schedule, I failed to offer adequate evaluation to students’ works and as a result, students may not have received proper encouragement or corrections they deserved. And I gradually came into the realization that students should be given enough time to think as well as to perform tasks, just as the saying has long ago enlightened me: More haste, less speed. In addition, more emphasis should have been placed on the focused ability I wanted students to acquire in this lesson by cutting down on some irrelevant activities. 
Roman was not built in a day. According to the English Curriculum Criteria for Regular High School, the content of the English course should include the thematic context, the discourse types, knowledge of language, knowledge of culture, language skills and learning strategies. Inspired by this, therefore, I shall guide my students along the track of writing with more insight into discourse types, language knowledge, cultural knowledge, etc. in my future teaching and I believe students will have a broader view of writing.
