Teaching design on “Unit 10 You are supposed to shake hands.”
I. Analysis of Teaching Material
This unit can help students better understand the different customs in different countries. Let the students know the importance of customs in order not to make mistakes when in different places. It can also enhance the students’ understanding of the world culture and expand the view of the international culture. II. Analysis of Students
Middle school students have great interest in different customs and manners, especially the students in Grade 9. They are more eager to the foreign culture. This unit can draw their attention and it can achieve the learning goals more easily. III. Teaching Aims
a. Aims of knowledge and skills:
Grasp the phrase— be supposed to do& should do.
Master the usage of the sentence structure— What are you supposed to do when you meet someone for the first time?
Students can use the phrase to talk about different customs in different countries.
b. Process and method
Grasp and use “be supposed to” by PPT, group discussing and role-play c. Aims of attitude and value
Learn some meeting manners and different customs. IV. Key points and difficulties

difficulties: train the consciousness of cross-cultural communication
the difference of meeting manners between Chinese and Western people V. Teaching Methods: PPT and so on. VI. Teaching Process Step 1 Warming-up
Review the words the students have learned in their last lesson. Step 2 Lead-in
Show a short film to the students to attract their interest.
Ask some questions to test the students understanding of the short film. And lead in the structure “What are you supposed to do when you meet someone?” Step 3 Practice
Listen to the tape and finish the listening part. Practice one by one to get familiar to this structure.
Divide the students into six groups and named the groups with different countries’ names. Students practice the sentences in groups and perform in class. Step 4 Consolidation
Work in groups to study the conversation part together. Discuss in groups and give a summary in front of the class. Different students have different parts to work on, they will take part in the English activity. Step 5 Homework
