Learning Plan for Inversion
I. Lead-in: (A Childhood Story)
Long long ago, there was a hill.
On the hill stood a temple.
In the temple lived an old monk.
The old monk was telling stories to a little monk.

II. Definition and Practice:
In a sentence: (1)If the adverbial (表時間/地點/方位的副詞) is put in the beginning of the sentences. (2) The predicate(謂語) is put before the subject. The sentence structure is called “Full Inversion(完全倒裝)”
1.你的信在這兒. Here ___ your letter.
2. 現在輪到你了. Now ______ your turn.
Rule1:副詞here, there, now, then, thus等放在句首時,要用完全倒裝。
※She walked away Away ______ ________.
Rule2:當代詞做主語時，主謂語序不變，不用倒裝。
1.水向下流。 Down ______ the water.
2. 車開走了。Away ________ the bus.
3. 門前坐著一個男孩。 In front of the door _______ a boy.
Rule3. 表示運動方向的副詞 （out, in , up, down, away, off 等）或地點狀語置于句首時要用完全倒裝
III. Definition and Practice:
Welcome back to earth!
Shenzhou XI return capsule touches down in Inner Mongolia on Nov 18, 2016. Never will Chinese people forget the exciting moment! The two Chinese astronauts, Jing Haipeng and Chen Dong have spent 33 days in the space. Not only do they work in the space capsule but also they live in it. All of us are very concerned about them during these days. Only when they safely land on the earth do we feel relaxed. We are proud of our great motherland.
Definition: In a sentence: 1. The negative adverb or “only+adverbial” is put in the beginning of the sentence. 2. The auxiliary verb(助動詞)/ be/modal verb（情態動詞) is before the subject. The sentence structure is called “Partial Inversion(部分倒裝).”
Practice:
(1) 我從未看過如此感人的電影。Never _____ ___ _____ such a moving film.
(2) 直到那時候，他才學會獨立生活。Not until then, _____ _____ _______ to live by himself.
(3) 我決不會接受他的任何提議。In no way _____ _____ adopt any of his ideas.
Rule1: 表示否定意義的副詞或短語置于句首，如no, not, never, seldom, little, hardly, at no time, in no way, not until… 等，句子要用部分倒裝。
(1) Only when he grew up ____ ___understand what is love.
(2) Only in this way ____ ______improve your English.
Rule2: only 所修飾的副詞、介詞短語或狀語從句放在句首時，主句要用部分倒裝。
(1) Tom can speak French. So ____ Jack.
(2) He didn’t go to the party, neither ____ ____ .
Rule3: 當 so, neither, nor 位于句首,表示前面的情況也適合于另一人或物時,要用部分倒裝。
※----Tom is a good boy.
---- So _____ _____.
Rule4: 若只是表示對前面所述內容的肯定、確認時，主謂不倒裝。

他不但會說英語還會說日語。
Not only ____ ____ speak English, but also he can speak Japanese.

她剛要出門，電話就響起來了。Hardly ____ ____ gone out when the phone rang.
Rule5: not only…but also…; hardly…when…; no sooner…than等放在句首時，句子要用部分倒裝。
IV. Practice for Consolidation鞏固練習
Translate the underline sentence into English by using inversion.
Before I went to England,
我對它幾乎一無所知. When I first arrived, I felt vary lonely and homesick. My English was so poor that I dare not go out alone.
我也不敢跟英國人說話.My roommate said only when I opened my mouth to communicate with others,
我才能夠提高英文. One day, my roommate took me to a English club for the foreign students. What a shock!
那里有好多的中國學生. Most of them could speak English so fluently.
我不會錯過這樣的好機會. I went there everyday. A few months later, I could speak English well and made many friends.
直到那時候我才喜歡上了英國.

I. Learning Aims:

To learn what is full inversion and partial inversion.
部分倒裝partial inversion---主語與助動詞/情態動詞/系動詞倒裝
結構：助動詞/情態動詞+ 主語+謂語動詞
e.g. Never have I heard such a thing.= I have never heard such a thing.
完全倒裝full inversion---主語與謂語動詞倒裝
結構：謂語動詞+ 主語
e.g. Down fell the rain.= The rain fell down.

To master the usages of full inversion and partial inversion.
A.完全倒裝句：
①表示方向、地點、時間的副詞組如：here, there, now, then, thus，out，away, up, down等副詞置于句首, 謂語動詞常用be, come, go, lie, run。當其主語為名詞時，通常要使用倒裝。例如：
There goes the bell.
②以引導詞there開頭的句子，須使用倒裝結構，除 there be 外還有there Live / stand / lie / exist等。例如：
There lived an old fisherman near the sea.
③直接引語的一部分或全部放在句首時，有時也用全部倒裝。
“Try again, Watson!” said Holmes.
④介詞短語做地點狀語放在句首。
In front of the house sat a little boy.
B.部分倒裝句:
①疑問句
Have you seen the film?
②so/such...that的so/such位于句首時。
So small were the words that he could hardly see them.
③so, neither, nor表示前面所述一件事也適合另一個人或物時.So用于肯定句, neither/nor 用于否定句.
Tom can speak French. So can Jack.
④否定意義的副詞或短語位于句首時，常見的有：never, hardly, seldom, rarely, scarcely, barely, little, not, nowhere, in no way, at no time, by no means, not only, not until(主句倒裝), no sooner等。
Seldom do I visit USA.
⑤Only 位于句首，強調句子的狀語時。
Only then did I fully understand what my father said.
⑥由as或though 引導的讓步狀語從句。
Young as he is, he knows some of the family.

Take notes of all the common adverbials and clarify them into groups.

Observe the sentences carefully and make a summary of the grammar structures.

Rewrite these sentences using inversion.
Example: I had never seen such a wonderful feast before.
Never had I seen such a wonderful feast before.
1.You will see so many seats only at a stadium in Beijing.
2. I have seldom seen a situation which made me so angry
3. You will be able to write a good report only after you have acquired the information you need
4. She is not only good at languages, but also at history and geography.
5. I have never read such an exciting report before.
6. She took part in a horse riding competition, and did not miss a jump once.
