Content of the course 
Audrey Hepburn was one of Hollywood’s greatest actresses. She worked as a model before she became an actress. Her successful career lasted for about 40 years. In 1951, while acting in France, she met Colette, a famous French writer. Hepburn’s beauty and charm caught the writer’s attention. She insisted that Hepburn was the right person for the lead role in the play Gigi.  
Two years later, Hepburn was chosen to play the lead role in Roman Holiday, and won the Oscar for Best Actress that year. During her lifetime, Hepburn had four more Oscar nominations. She made her final appearance in the film Always in 1989 and played the role of an angel. Teaching analysis 
Target students are Grade 3 middle school students. They have known some English to some extent. They are willing to share their ideas with teachers and other people. On the basis of founding a solid foundation of language proficiency, the teacher aims to create an open and flexible atmosphere for them to learn and to share. Curriculum  
Students are supposed to be able to improve their language proficiency, cultural awareness,  abilities of learning and thinking. Teaching procedures 
Step 1. Warm-up &Lead-in (3 mins) 
1. Divide the whole class into two groups (Team Fire and Team   
Water), and each member of the team can win scores for their team. The higher score winner will have an award. 2. Watch a video about Audrey Hepburn. 3. Lead to the topic. 
Step 2. Fast-reading (3 mins) Read and answer 
Purpose  Enhance students’ competitive consciousness 
between two groups, thus stimulating learning atmosphere in class.

4. Write the factors on the blackboard and make students have a discussion about it. Step 6. Debate (6 mins) 
Have a debate about “What makes people successful, appearance or personalities?” 
The team with higher scores has the right to choose their standing point first.  
Step 8. Conclusion (1 min) 
Quote Martin Luther King’s speech to conclude the point of view. 
A beauty should not be judged by her appearance, but by the content  of her character. 
Step 9. Homework (1 min) 
1. Retell the passage and write a report. 
2. Do an interview to ask friends’ ideas about the topic of the debate, and write down their opinions. 
 
Consolidate students’ understanding about Audrey Hepburn’s life by  giving  key words and retelling the passages, thus  
Improving proportion of  output from students.  
Improve their abilities to  solve problems in life and 
their ability of learning.  
Relate what we learn with those in life, thus guiding 
our life in some ways. That will enhance students’ thinking and learning abilities as the New 
Curricular for Middle School Students asks for.  
Feedback 
Most students were extremely interested in this all-time best actress in the world. They were curious about what made her successful. They were totally absorbed in obtaining the essentials. It would be better if more emphasis had been put on the improvement of students’ cultural awareness and consciousness of being a comprehensive person.

Hollywood’s all-time best — Audrey Hepburn 
 
Audrey Hepburn is one of Hollywood’s all-time greatest actress. When she died in 1993, the world felt very sad about the loss of a great beauty, a great actress and a great humanitarian.  
Hepburn was born in Belgium on 4 May 1929. As a child, she lobed dancing and dreamt of becoming a successful ballet dancer. After World War II, she moved to London with her mother. She worked as a model before becoming an actress.  
In 1951, while acting in France, Hepburn met the French writer Colette. Hepburn’s beauty and charm caught the writer’s attention. Colette insisted that Hepburn was the perfect girl for the lead role in Gigi, a play based upon her novel, although Hepburn had never played any major roles before. That event marked the beginning of her successful career.

During her lifetime, Hepburn had four more Oscar nominations. In 1989, Hepburn made her final appearance in the film Always and played the role of an angel.  
Hepburn’s achievements went beyond the film industry. She began to work for UNICEF in the 1950s. Hepburn spent her last poor children in different parts of the world. She won many awards because of her efforts in this area.  
In 1991, Hepburn discovered that she had cancer. On 20 January 1993, she passed away peacefully in her sleep.
