[教材解析]：本篇課文選自人教版新課標教材的選修模塊7，為第一課時，閱讀課,將Warming-up, Pre-reading, Reading, Comprehending部分放在同一課時教學，設計成為一節閱讀課。故事發生于20世紀初期，一個名叫“Old Tom” 的虎鯨幫助捕鯨人捕鯨以及營救遇難者的事情。通過對文章的整體認知和把握，教師給學生創設情境，讓學生和自己的搭檔自主地學習、思考和討論，從而激發學生對動物的關注，引導學生要學習虎鯨和捕鯨人之間和諧共處，團隊協作的精神。
[學情分析]:本課是高二年級下學期的課程，學生已經具備一定的知識儲備和運用能力，但由于授課的對象的英語基礎水平較好，但是還是存在參差不齊的現象，為了激發全部學生的好奇心和求知欲，課堂采用了圖片引入法，讓學生對狗和獵人的動作進行預測，引導學生思考哪些動物和人類具備良好的關系，最終引出虎鯨和人類也是其中的一組的形式引導學生進入本節課。通過對閱讀的整體理解后，讓學生賞析文章之所以生動形象的原因，是由于一些對話和短語用的很巧妙。最后，由學生扮演課文中出現的不同角色，來活躍課堂氣氛，引發學生對合作精神的領悟。同時，在閱讀課中教師要滲透閱讀的方法和答題的技巧，培養學生閱讀的綜合能力,引導學生賞析英文表達中的精妙之處。
