The class is given to Senior One students who have mastered a certain amount of English words and phrases as well as acquired some useful reading strategies such as skimming for main idea and scanning for specific information. However, they still have difficulty in dealing with some problems concerned with inferring and understanding the tone of the passage.

Step1 Lead-in 
Show students some pictures that could represent ancient civilizations in China. Step2 Reading comprehension 
1. Tell students what we should pay attention to when we read diary entries recording someone’s 
travels. 2. Fast- reading 
   Read the text quickly and tell “True” or “False”: 1). Ann feels lucky to go on the trip. (     ) 2).Pompeii and Loulan are both in China. (     ) 
3).When Ann saw the ancient Roman city of Pompeii as it was 2,000 years ago, she    felt sorry for it. (     ) 
4).Loulan was a stopping point on the famous Silk Road between the East and the West. (    )

A.Listen to Ann’ s description of Pompeii and answer the questions: 1).When was Pompeii founded? 
2).On 24 August AD79 , what happened to Pompeii? 3).Who discovered Pompeii? 
4).When Ann walked around the city, what did she see?  
B.Read the information about Loulan and fill in the blanks: 
   Loulan was a commercial city, which is believed to have been ________ (gradual) covered over by sandstorms. Sven found the remains of building, together _______ a lot of treasures, _________ (include) coins , painted pots and material such ______ silk, documents and wall paintings. We found the ruins most ______ (interest). 3.Drawing a mind map

What can we do to protect the civilizations from being destroyed?      
Step 4 Homework.  
 June 9th is Cultural Heritage Day, please write a letter to your friends telling the importance of protecting our cultural heritage and the ways of protection.
